Obituary of Merle Charlene Atkinson
Merle was born on November 8, 1945 in Geneva Township, WI to Ted and Elsie (Molzen) Culp. She is the youngest of 8 children. When Merle was 17, and working at White Castle, she met and married Roger Atkinson – the first love of her life.
Merle and Roger happily devoted the next 32 years to raising their children, Brian, Jeanne, Deborah, and Michelle, until Roger’s untimely death in 1994.
Heartbroken, Merle found purpose in volunteering her time for hospice, meals on wheels, and spending time with her grandchildren. Luckily, Merle was able to find love once again, and met Ron Hauglie and their relationship blossomed into a life-long partnership. Over the next decade, Merle and Ron had many adventures traveling, spending time with children, grandchildren, and just enjoying life’s little moments. Merle was heartbroken again at the passing of Ron in 2017. Since then, Merle has continued with her charitable organizations, traveling with her kids, and cheering on the MN Vikings. She was devoted to family and friends and cherished the time she spent with her loved ones. Merle leaves behind children, Brian (Lynette), Jeanne (Mike), Debbie (Brad), and Michelle (Kevin); 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; along with Chris (Greg) Mullins, Katy (Bob) Relling, Annette (Jeff) Hanson; sisters, Lorna Culp and Diana Benson; and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
A visitation will be held from 1-3PM on Friday, January 27, 2023 at Sandberg Funeral Home (2593 E. 7th Av, No. St. Paul) with a short service at 3PM. Private interment Union Cemetery.
