Obituary of J Scott Miller

J Scott Miller - dedicated father, papa and friend, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at home in his sleep on August 22, 2023, at the age of 75.

Scott was born on October 05, 1947, in Mason City, IA.  After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in West Des Moines, IA, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966. He served aboard the USS Sanctuary (AH-17) as Hosptial Corpsman Third Class. Scott was awarded a bronze star for his act of heroism while serving in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1970. Following his discharge from the Navy, Scott went on to study Nursing at Graceland College for two years before he decided to follow in his mother’s footsteps working in the optical business. Scott was very patriotic and loved his country and family.

Scott enjoyed the outdoors. He spent his time shooting at the gun range, loading his own bullets, taking trips to South Dakota to prairie dog hunt, fishing, and golfing. Scott had a love for football and his Sundays were spent cheering on his team, the Minnesota Vikings. Out of all the sports his grandsons participated in, Scott had a passion for wrestling, and he loved watching them participate in the sport.

Scott loved music and his family fondly remembers his singing along to songs while exercising, cleaning, and doing yard work. Scott was also known to make up his own songs and had a great sense of humor, that kept his family and friends laughing and smiling. Scott’s presence was large, and you knew when he was in the room. Scott was a present and loving father and his passing leaves behind a hole within his family that cannot be filled.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabele Miller; father, Maurice Miller; sister, Nancy Daly; and son-in-law, Robert Burg.

Scott is survived by his 3 children, Jessica Miller, Christina (Jesse) Frandrup, Jarrod (Heather) Miller; grandsons, Layne, Greysen, Bryce and Jaxon; his sweet dog, Skyler.

Funeral Services will be held at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery at 9:30am on September 18, 2023. Following the funeral, a small celebration of life will be held at his daughter, Christina’s house. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Vietnam Veterans of America.
