Obituary of Gregory Allen Thames

Gregory “Greg” Thames, Sr., 65, of St. Paul, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2023, at his home in Oakdale, MN. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Greg was born on August 10, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late John Henry Thames and Mary L. Goodwin. He grew up in Indiana as part of a large and close-knit family with nine siblings. Greg served in the Army from September 1977, and he was discharged from service in September 1999. He was proud to serve his country.

Greg married his best friend of over twenty years, Jean Moos, on August 7, 2021.  He was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren who were his greatest joy. He adored them and spoiled them with love and attention.  His favorite title in his life was “papa”.  

Greg was a man of many interests and talents, and he treasured moments visiting with his friends and family.  He had a great sense of humor and a contagious smile that brightened up any room.  He enjoyed watching sports and wasn’t afraid to have a little fun at Sidewinders Bar in North St. Paul.  He was never short of a few bucks hoping to win big on pull-tabs. 

Greg is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Shynivea, Shamona, and Gregory, Jr., Jennifer, and Brad, and many dear family and friends near and far.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Sandberg Funeral Home in North St. Paul, MN. Family and friends are welcome to visit from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Greg Thames will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory live on in the hearts of those who loved him
