Tom was born and raised in Hibbing, MN, and graduated in 1976 from Hibbing High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1976 and served on the USS Prairie as a photographer until 1979. During his years of service, Tom would often ride his motorcycle across the country from Hibbing to San Diego, CA. Following an honorable discharge, he started classes at Saint Paul College to study civil engineering. He started working at the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 1981 and held various positions throughout his 40 years working for the department, finishing his career as a Senior Project Manager. Tom would tell others that there isn’t a single major highway in the metro area that he did not touch. Some of his most relevant jobs included Unweave the Weave (the I-694/I-35E interchange), Spaghetti Junction (downtown St. Paul), the 35E Parkway (downtown St. Paul), and the approach on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix Crossing (MN-36). Following his retirement in 2020, he enjoyed numerous road trips and vacations with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents George and Bonnie Krier, brother-in-law Gene Matthew, and parents-in-law John and Charlotte Adams. Tom is survived by his wife, Amy, of 40 years, children Alexis (Jordan) Wolf, John (Carla), and Daniel (Vanessa), six grandchildren, sisters Kim (Neal) Walker and Debbie Matthew, godson Eric Walker, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.
